One of the first thing you’ll notice upon reaching Lhasa, is the heavy military presence. Unlike the guys pictured above, most of them are armed with assault rifles or shotguns. You’ll find them manning outposts at road junction or making patrols around the Barkhor area. The pilgrims will walk around Jokhang temple in a clockwise circuit while they will be the only ones doing an anti-clockwise circuit. They are photography shy naturally.

The school kids that I met in Tingri all had ruddy cheeks like this boy. Was told that it was due to the lack of protection against the cold. The town is 4300 meters above sea level after all. The kids were generally very shy towards the camera. This boy was the only exception. He was very cheeky (no pun intended), repeating over and over again the only English word that he knew – “Money”.
